I am a parent. How can I help my child with school homework?

Many times, we see our children face homework with quite a fright, and as parents we sometimes tend to make them feel self-conscious, uncomfortable and unease when it comes to dealing with homework, especially when they are confronted with things they don’t understand.

Based on this, there are some specific things we should take in mind when it comes to helping with homework:

We should take under consideration:
The interests of the child.
The child’s psychology  and generally the environment around him.
If the child has a negative approach towards studying try implementing pleasant activities in combination with the context of that day’s homework, or that relates to something your child is learning at school.  That helps adjust feelings towards studying. Ex. Read a story with fun pictures, make a collage or drawing that relate to today’s story/ lesson! Be creative and inspiring!
Avoid negative and caustic comments about his performance. It never benefits in the long run!

To help learn spelling of certain key words, write words on cards and use a different color for the letters they write wrong.  Ex. If you want him to learn the word "bicycle", write the word bicycle and get him to glue a picture or draw a bicycle next to the word! (Stick on the wall where he will see it daily) and never forget to reward his positive performance!
Play hangman, solve puzzles together! Make a fun way, to attract the interest of your child. (Play hangman with words you want your child to learn).
If your child does not have time to take notes during the lesson, ask the teacher if she can give out a copy of the notes that are needed.
Take time to learn the multiplication tables. I have seen many students, that unfortunately can’t progress in maths since they have this huge gap. (Look for information on the internet, or ask a teacher to inform you ways to establish this basic knowledge, and generally to inform you ways to assist your child at his level and pace of learning. A great way to help learn math’s, such as multiplications, is through songs and action!
Particular attention should be given to the place your child chooses to study.

Encourage your child to do his homework in a particular room. This room should not be noisy or loaded with posters and games that will interfere with your child’s focus (we do not want any visual context that is not educational, and distract child’s attention). Also, take in mind that the office your child is using should not be facing a window.
Finally, a child can’t be doing his homework for hours. Just like you and me, he especially needs a break! Studying should be done for 1 hour max, with 15 to 20 minutes brake in between these hours.

We find that this procedure gives the opportunity for your child to unwind and relax and continue with a more energetic and positive mood to study.
When we take under consideration these small details, it truly helps face the main difficulties of homework time and in addition helps eliminate every negative aspect that our child shaped in what concerns studying.

Remember ... The aim is not for your child just to get his homework finished! The main purpose is for him to understand through experiencing the process of learning.

I will be back with more information and tips of how to help out with specific subjects!
